White latex adhesive is a water-soluble adhesive, a thermoplastic adhesive polymerized from vinyl acetate monomer. It is commonly called white latex or PVAC emulsion. Its chemical name is polyvinyl acetate adhesive, made by synthesizing vinyl acetate from acetic acid and ethylene, with the addition of titanium dioxide (or, for lower grades, light calcium carbonate, talc powder, and other powders). The milky white thick liquid is obtained by emulsion polymerization. White latex adhesive can cure at room temperature, cures quickly, has high bonding strength, good toughness of the bonding layer, good durability, and is not prone to aging.
The disadvantages of polyvinyl acetate emulsion adhesive are its poor water resistance and moisture resistance. It easily absorbs moisture in humid air, and using it at high temperatures can cause creep, reducing bonding strength. It also easily freezes and destroys the emulsion when stored below -5°C. Using a polymer compound polymerized from polyvinyl alcohol and formaldehyde as a modifier improves the water resistance and freeze-thaw resistance of the emulsion, expanding its application range.
Uses of white latex adhesive:
It can be widely used for bonding paper products (wallpaper), and can also be used as a waterproof coating and wood adhesive. It is used for bonding wood materials. Using water as a dispersant, it is non-flammable, easy to clean, and cures at room temperature. It has good adhesion to wood, paper, and fabric, high bonding strength, a colorless and transparent cured layer, good toughness, and does not contaminate the bonded materials. The emulsion has good stability, and the storage period can reach more than half a year. Therefore, it is widely used in printing binding and furniture manufacturing, as an adhesive for paper, wood, cloth, leather, ceramics, etc. It can also be used as a modifier for adhesives such as phenolic resin and urea-formaldehyde resin, and for manufacturing polyvinyl acetate latex paint, etc.
How to use white latex adhesive:
1. Before using white latex adhesive to bond materials, you must first clean the surface of the materials to be bonded. For example, if the material surface has oil, water, dust, or other dirt, use a cleaning agent such as alcohol to clean the material surface, ensuring it is clean. White latex adhesive can be used for bonding when the surface is dry.
2. When applying the adhesive, if applying by hand, you need to use a brush to evenly apply the white latex adhesive to the surface of one of the materials to be bonded, then apply it evenly to the other material to be bonded. After applying, press the two materials together tightly. They can be fixed with clamps, tape, or other things that hold the two materials together. Generally, after pressing for 2 hours, the materials will be positioned. Complete curing takes 24 hours. (Note: The curing time of the adhesive will be affected by indoor humidity and temperature. If used at low temperature and humidity, the positioning time and complete curing time of white latex adhesive will be correspondingly delayed. Conversely, in a dry, well-ventilated environment, the positioning time and complete curing time of white latex adhesive will be shortened.)
3. When using white latex adhesive, do not add water to dilute the white latex adhesive to save costs. Because this will affect the bonding of the white latex adhesive.
